'Employee engagement is an investment we make for the privilege of staying in business'
-Ian Hutchinson-
Employee relations are essential for an organization’s success. Companies use different methods to work with employees both as a group and individually. Learning and Development (L&D) can be a key approach to supporting strong employee relations (Crail, 2024)
For success, an organization should promote unity, so employers and employees share common goals and interests. Today, companies often focus on partnership rather than traditional, adversarial approaches to employee relations. Some organizations even use a power-sharing approach to build trust (Olaiya, 2023)
Work design should also allow employees the opportunity to learn and grow. This motivates employees to stay loyal and perform well (Stanford, 2012)
According to Maslow’s Motivation Theory, people have a need for self-esteem, such as confidence, competence, and independence, which is the fourth level in the hierarchy of needs. L&D can help employees build self-esteem by developing skills that make them feel capable and valued (Maslow, 2013)
Here are some benefits of L&D
for employee relations (Jehanzeb & Bashir, 2013):
- Boosts Motivation and Engagement: L&D can make employees feel more connected to their roles. When they feel supported in their development, they’re more engaged and motivated.
- Enhances Communication and Collaboration: Collaborative learning brings employees from different departments together, improving communication and teamwork skills.
- Builds Trust and Loyalty: When companies invest in their employees’ growth, it builds trust and loyalty. Employees are more likely to stay with a company that values their development.
- Improves Conflict Resolution Skills: L&D often includes training in conflict resolution, emotional intelligence, and active listening, which helps employees and managers resolve conflicts in a healthy way.
- Encourages Open Feedback: L&D programs promote open communication, making employees feel comfortable discussing challenges, asking for advice, and sharing ideas, which strengthens respect and understanding.
- Aligns Personal and Company Goals: L&D helps employees connect their personal growth
with the organization’s goals, fostering a shared sense of purpose and
partnership. Employees can see how their success contributes to the
success of the company.
